Piranha 3DD has everything needed to make it a fun sequel to the first film. Although shot on a lower budget than that of its predecessor, Piranha 3DD features many of the same actors that were featured in the first one. It also features some new "baddies" for the teens, including piranha's that look like big fish swimming underwater and come up to snatch unsuspecting victims. The film was directed by Josh Evans and executive produced by Gunnar Eikeren, Gunnar Hansen and Shane Salerno. Evans had directed two previous films: The Reaper (2007) and Dead of Night (2009). During the scene where Vena's boyfriend Ryan is in the aquarium, Casey Affleck said: "I was on a chain of steep steps, and I got to this point where I felt really tight. I had gotten on top of him on the chain of steep steps, and I was just about to get into the water when my chain snapped. I then fell off this chain into this pool." The film is based on an unmade script for a third installment in the "Piranha" franchise. On April 5, 2009, it was announced that "Piranha 3DD" had been picked up for development as a 3-D theatrical release by MGM. On May 31, 2009, it was confirmed that Joe Lynch would direct the film and that Richard Dreyfuss would star as one of the two main characters. The other character's name and role were not revealed at that time. On July 10, 2009, Roger Corman announced that the script for "Piranha 3DD" was complete. Principal photography began in late October 2010 in Bulgaria for the film's underwater scenes; filming in Bulgaria reportedly cost $1.5 million under producer Ed Elbert. On November 17, 2010, it was reported that Creature Effects (who had worked on "Piranha 3D") would handle the film's special effects; however, it was later revealed that director Joe Lynch would do the movie's special effects himself with a budget of $250,000. In January 2011, additional photography for the film took place at Reel EFX Group studios in Montreal. cfa1e77820
